India exports carpets to over 70 nations worldwide. Among the biggest importers from India are the United States, Germany, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Sweden. With US$214.84 million, the USA was the largest importer of carpets from India in 2023–2024 (till June). Handmade carpet exports to the United States totalled US$211 million in FY23. In FY25 (till June), Germany and the United Kingdom were the top three importers, with US$23 million and US$17 million, respectively, coming from India for handmade carpet imports. Germany and the UK imported handmade carpets valued at US$ 93.49 million and US$ 83.75 million, respectively, in 2022–2023.

India’s handmade carpet exporters now have a strong chance as China’s carpet sector has diversified its production from handmade to machine-made. An encouraging first step is the Carpet Export Promotion Council’s (CEPC) plan to establish a warehouse in China to support its member exporters. India’s carpet exports have a high chance of expanding in nations like Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Norway, Sweden, Australia, and New Zealand.

One of the traditional export destinations for India’s handcrafted carpets and floor coverings is the United States. Although they first surpassed the US$ 1.0 billion threshold in 2020–21, exports to the USA still have a lot of room to increase.
